School Houses
As part of an inquiry project by the Year 5/6 students in 2013, Evanis Maiava researched Otahuhu landmarks and developed 4 house names and linked them to the current house colours. These house names were accepted by staff and students and presented to the community at the School Prize-giving Assembly. A School House Shied is also presented by Mr Jason Swann to promote teamwork, competition and outstanding performance and service throughout our school curriculum.
House Names:
Tāhuhu (Mountain) – taken from that of a Maori chief called Tāhuhu, and means ‘Of Tahuhu’. Otahuhu is taken from the Maori name of a volcanic cone now know as Mt Richmond. It was the site of a pa, and retains some Maori earthworks from that time such as kumara pits and terracing.
Yellow – which represents the yellow colour of the lava flowing from the volcanic cone.
Te Tō Waka (Isthmus) – considered the most important portage of all of NZ. The narrow stretch of land between the Tamaki River and the Manukau Harbour, was used extensively by Maori as they travelled between the east and west coasts.
Red – which represents the blood that was shed during the raids and wars as the soldiers carried their wakas through this portage.
Manukau (Harbour) – Otahuhu is located by the Manukau Harbour.
Blue – which represents the harbour as a body of water.
Tamaki (River) - as Otahuhu is situated between the Manukau Harbour and the Tamaki River.
Green – representing the Tamaki river channel, which is marked with large green buoys.
