Kia Ora Otahuhu School Whanau,
The term is well underway and there is lots on the go!
Next week we celebrate Samoan Language week. The theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week 2023 is 'Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' which means 'Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity'. When you are proud of your language and can speak it, you will also be more grounded in your identity as a Samoan. This year's theme focuses on the importance of the Samoan language and identity. We will begin Samoan Language week with a flag ceremony on Monday 29th May at 10am. You are all welcome to attend.
Last week we celebrated Pink Shirt day. Lots of children came to school in their pink shirts. Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. ‘Korero Mai, Korero Atu’ means to speak up and speak out in reference to bullying. ‘Speak up’ refers to having conversations with your friends, whanau, children, Kaiako/teachers and wider communities to come up with ideas and strategies to address bullying. ‘Speak Up’ is about asking for help when you need it. Bullying often makes people feel alone, but Pink Shirt Day shows that many people care. Many people want to play their part and make Aotearoa a safe, welcoming and respectful place for everyone.
