One Hour a Day

Rose Neal —

Reading, Writing, & Maths

One of the initiatives of the new government is mandating that all schools teach Reading, Writing, and Maths for at least one hour a day.

This is nothing new or different for us. Reading, Writing, and Maths have always been the focus for teaching at all year levels. The Ministry of Education has sent out information to schools showing different options for how this can be managed across the school week. It does not mean that we need to set aside one hour exactly each day for the 3 core subjects, as that would be unrealistic for many children.

Teachers plan and teach specific reading, writing, and maths lessons for children of all levels and abilities across the week. They also integrate or incorporate Reading, Writing, and Maths into other activities such as P.E. Science, Social Sciences, Health, the Arts, and Technology.

We believe that children need many opportunities to work and play collaboratively and to develop their curiosity and interest in a range of topics and subjects. This links well with our 3 school Values:

  • Aroha- Compassion
  • Māia- Courage
  • Pākiki- Curiosity
