New Zealand Curriculum Refresh

Rose Neal —

We are pleased with the progress teachers and children are making using the new structured Maths and Literacy programmes in Term 1.

All teachers are using the Maths No Problem structured Mathematics programme. Teachers have had two full days of training with this programme and ongoing professional development in Term 1.

The Ruru team (Year 4) invited parents and family members to see how the programme works in action at their Whanau Friday last week. It was heartening to see so many parents and family members come along and learn alongside their child. Some of the parents I spoke with were interested in the range of abilities among children and were impressed with how well the teachers catered to all individual needs using this programme.

All our Year 1-3 teachers are using BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) to teach literacy, and parents were invited to meetings after school last week to learn more about the programme and how it works. This term, some of our Year 4 and 6 teachers are undergoing training in the new Year 4-6 BSLA programme, and we will keep you informed about this, as it is a new programme for all schools that selected BSLA as their preferred Structured Literacy programme.
