Team Ruru News
Rose Neal - August 25, 2023
Last Friday we collaborated in three or four little groups and we made little places like the artic, the NZ native forest, the ocean and jungle. We have learnt about these places in our writing. We had to choose them. We made little habitats with paper, cardboard and other stuff. We collaborated and made a masterpiece, it was very fun and exciting.

Our Visiting teacher
Our teacher is Miss Muir and there is another teacher called Miss Cooke. Miss Cooke is still going to university but she is visiting to become a teacher, so she chose our class and our school. She was in our class for 5 weeks. In 5 weeks, she was so, so, so, so, so kind so I think she will be a good, kind and nice teacher. I wonder how old she is? She is gone now. I miss Miss Cooke a lot. She has now gone back to university

Te Reo Māori
When we do Te Reo Māori we like to challenge ourselves with hard words. We do numbers in Māori and we do colours like pink (mā whero) and red (whero) or purple (poroporo) or numbers like five (rima) or nine (iwa) and one (tahi) or 79 (whitu tekau mā iwa) and 21 (rua tekau mā tahi) or 55 (rima tekau mā rima). My favourite thing to learn is colours.

Writing
In Writing we have been doing information reports. We chose a topic and wrote about it. We usually choose an animal or a country to write about. I was writing about Komodo Dragons. I learnt that a Komodo Dragon’s saliva contains large amounts of bacteria which poisons their victims within 24 hours. Also they have big and bulky skin and their tails are as big as their bodies. I chose Komodo Dragons because they’re creatures that I don’t know much about.

The Blessing
On Tuesday 15th August, it was the day of the blessing. Out of everything we have done this term this is my favourite thing!
First we practised our songs in our lines and when it was time to go to the blessing we walked from pod 4 to the new building. It is big, beautiful and has three floors so there are a lot of stairs-you can’t even count all the steps!
We started at the top floor, all the way to the bottom while John explained what our songs meant before and afterward and said a karakia (prayer). On the first floor we sang Te Aroha, on the second floor it was E Hara i te Mea and finally on the third floor we sang Maku ra Pea. They all sounded beautiful.
After that we went to the hall for some kai. I had one cup of tea, two cupcakes, three oranges and a tomato and cheese croissant, delicious!
And that was the end of the blessing.

Term 3
This term I have had lots of fun so far! On the day when all the art was coming down, I was so excited. That’s because I love showing my art to my family and keeping it forever! JAD was fun too, especially designing and building my own dream bedroom because I got to create it with paper, cardboard and even fluff.
The new building is going to be amazing because there is an art room next to our space and I love art so much!
Writing has been fun too. We have been writing information reports. My favourite one was when we got to choose what animal or habitat we wanted to write about. I wrote about squirrels which had all of the interesting facts about squirrels I could find out or think of.
I love what has happened in Term 3 so far and I am excited about what is going to happen next!

Matariki
This term Room 12 has been collaborating with Room 3 for Matariki. We learnt about the star Waitā, which represents the ocean and creatures that live in the salty water. For our first activity, we split into groups of 3 or 4 and coloured in pictures of ocean animals. My group coloured a dolphin that was supposed to be grey and black but we coloured it different shades of blue instead! It was very funny.
The following day we went up to Room 3 again. This time we were making stars. We drew on pieces of paper and wrote down facts about our chosen sea creature. I think we collaborated very well.
Finally our beautiful stars were done. We hung them up on panels in the hall.
Ruru pod also decided to celebrate Matariki by eating kai (food). Room 11 made fairy bread, Room 9 made popcorn and Room 10 made kiwifruit with a bit of chocolate. They all tasted delicious but I think the chocolate crackle my class made was the best!
It was a wonderful Matariki, I really liked the way we celebrated it.

Kapa Haka
Hi! I’m Gabriel, I’m in the Kapa haka group and we’ve been practicing for the mihi whakatau, the blessing for our new build and of course we have done the performance at North Cross Intermediate that probably everybody would know about! But if you don’t, here are some songs that we sang and a little bit about what we did. We sang Tutira mai, Tihei Mauriora, Take it Easy by Stan Walker and Te Aroha. Basically, it is a time that we can see other schools perform and watch some slides which showed how we all practiced our performances. We were also involved in the opening of the new school building. You might also know that, but of course if you don’t, we sang a song on each level of the new building. I had a fun time at the blessing and enjoyed listening to our Kapa haka sing.

JAD -Just Awesome Day!
Ruru pod has been doing JAD for a long, long time! We have been doing a project on insects! Now let me tell you about it! First we picked a classroom and we can pick whatever classroom that we wanted. Cool right? I picked insects because we get to go outside and look at some bugs. I like to look at bugs because they move around using different walking skills. Then we got to make our own 3D super bugs. Now it’s time to say goodbye, I mean see you later alligator! Ha ha!

Term 3 Highlight
My highlight of Term 3 was dream bedroom for JAD because you could make it however you wanted. You could use different colours and make it 3D.
I did it by myself and I had so many ideas. The teachers gave me more ideas too! I even made an upstairs for my bedroom! The teachers gave me so many different materials to used and I liked it when the teachers checked our work.
Even though we had all day, I wish we had more time to finish it. The teachers need to do something different next time as lots of people liked the bedroom idea. Maybe the teachers can do make your own waterpark or something. Anyway, I am just happy I had fun!

My Term 3 Highlight
My highlight from Term 3 was information report because we got to use the devices to research the topic and write about it. We get the information that we need and write about it on our planning sheet without the teachers help.
For example, I chose Japan because it has sushi and lots of different information. It is very easy to write about because we only need a title, general statement, description, and evaluation. We only have to search up the information of that topic and write it down. Sometimes we get to turn it into a book and book cover for other people to read. It was very fun!

My Term 3 Highlight
My highlight of Term 3 was information report because I really like how you worked with a buddy to search on a device about the topic and find information.
Every Friday afternoon, we choose a topic out of the 4 topics. We get to choose if we want to work with a buddy or by yourself. We always go to the class we chose and plan our writing carefully with detail. For our animal writing, we had to include general statement, habitat, diet, and finally a fun fact!
When I was writing, I searched on a device and I was so amazed how interesting the fact was because I never knew that information!
Next time I want to choose a cooler topic and write it more engaging.
