At Ōtūmoetai Intermediate School, education has a strong focus on holistic and experiential learning which extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. Here are some key aspects of education outside of the classroom.

  1. Outdoor Education: Our natural environment provides numerous opportunities for outdoor education. We incorporate outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and environmental studies to promote hands on learning and a deeper connection with the environment.

At Year 7 students attend camp at Ngatuhoa Lodge.

At Year 8 students attend Waimarino Water & Adventure Park activities and challenges plus experience the high ropes at Adrenalin Forest.

  2. Cultural Experiences: Students may participate in cultural experiences including Marae visits, traditional storytelling and learning about local tikanga and histories.

  3. Field Trips: Field trips to museums, art galleries, historical sites and local businesses are common. These trips provide students with real-world experiences that complement classroom learning.

  4. Community Engagement: We encourage community engagement and service learning. Students may be involved in volunteer work, community projects, performances in care centres that give them the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life situations.

  5. Sports and Extra-Curricular Activities: Extracurricular activities such as sports, music, drama, art and clubs help students develop teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills outside of the classroom.

  6. Te Ao Māori Learning: Te Ao Māori is an important part of our school education. Students receive opportunities to learn Te Reo Māori, Tikanga in various contexts.
