Due to the generosity of Professor Chris Battershill, Coastal Science, Waitkato University – the Year 8 Rutherford Science students had a fishy Friday morning with a Ribaldo, aka Googly-eyed cod. Chris said this specimen was caught at around 1000m off Whaakari/White Island.

The fish had cut marks in it and a missing pectoral fin where scientists had been taking samples. Due to the depth that this fish had come from, we looked at the Ocean Zones and bioluminescence in deep sea species. This was also an opportunity to discuss career options and all the amazing things available to us locally, with an incredible environment and educational opportunities on our doorstep.
