School Visit - Sustainable Waterways
On Monday 19th of June, the Senior School (Rooms 5, 6 and 7) went to the Hall for a special Inquiry lesson with Anne-Marie and Duncan Wells.
They were here to talk about how farmers are keeping our waterways clean and sustainable for the future, which was very interesting.
At first, they talked about how every farm with a waterway on it has to have fences and some sort of plant or long grass around the waterways. Then they talked about how gasses get released into the air and how nitrogen goes into the ground when there's an animal on the grass.
After they taught us that, we did a little experiment on what water would go through the soil the fastest. First, we got an ice cream container filled with all pebbles, then we filled one with half-soil half pebbles, and finally one with only soil. The one with only soil took the most time and the one with only pebbles took the shortest amount of time. This was to replicate the soil on farms and their drainage. Good drainage reduces soil and nutrient loss from runoff and can help avoid soil erosion, which helps keep our waterways sustainable.
It was awesome to hear all the ways farmers are working hard to promote healthy and sustainable waterways.
