Room 5 Stewart Island Camp

Glen Beadle —

Room 5 arrived at Oban in the afternoon of Monday last week. It took a while but we had everything sorted out by dinner time. We were lucky to see a sunset on the first night which was amazing with mixes of magenta and blues.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we went out and did many fun activities like charter fishing aboard the Tequila boat where we caught lots of Blue Cod, fishing off the Golden Bay wharf, and doing beautiful scenic walks through the native bush. We did that in groups that mainly consisted of eight children and two adults. On Thursday we set off for an 18 km tramp from Lee Bay to Port William and back. It was painful but the view was breathtaking.

After dinner each night we did entertaining activities. On Tuesday night we had a games night, where we were in teams playing against other teams in charades, basketball, table tennis and connect 4. Wednesday night we competed in the Stewart Island Camp Quiz Night. We had 6 rounds, all on different topics and we had to answer as many questions correctly as we could. The adult round was the best as we had to guess which parent helper the question was about. We held a lip sync and skit night on our last night, which was a lot of fun.

Room 5 hit the jackpot with yummy food like fish 'n’ chips, roast lamb and don't get me started with those mouth-watering desserts.

On Friday we stopped off at the Invercargill Velodrome to have a go at track cycling. This was an amazing experience and a challenge. We went on the track bikes and zoomed around the track making sure we were carefully going around the corners of the track. The bikes were very different to what we were used to and took a while to get used to the bikes and the track.

All of us in Room 5 would like to thank all parent helpers who gave up their time to make this trip possible and all families who donated food to help out.
