Screen Time Fact!
A recent study on screen time out of Australia showed that (of the children and families studied) children aged 1-3 years old were consuming, on average, 3 hours of screen time per day.
World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines suggest a maximum of 1 hour per day at 3 years old.
With just 1 minute of screen time, the study found that children: heard 7 fewer adult words, made 5 fewer vocalisations and engaged in 1 less conversation turn.
Following the WHO guidelines, the study found that children: heard 397 fewer adult words, made 294 fewer vocalisations and engaged in 68 less conversational turns.
The study found that the 'average' child, consuming 3 hours of screen time per day: heard 1,191 fewer adult words, made 882 fewer vocalisations and engaged in 204 less conversational turns.
In one year: Children who follow the WHO guidelines and consume 1 hour of screen time per day will hear 144,905 fewer adult words, make 107,310 fewer vocalisations and will miss out on 24,820 conversational turns.
In one year: Children who consume the 'average' 3 hours of screen time per day will hear 434,715 fewer adult words, make 321,930 fewer vocalisations and will miss out on 74,460 conversational turns.
