Term 2 Happenings in Room 7

by Kate Jackson

We have had a very busy 7 weeks in Room 7! It is hard to believe how quickly this term is flying by. Our class is growing, we have welcomed two new students to Room 7 this term - Saloka and Brooklyn. It's always great meeting new friends.

This term we have been scientists! We have been learning about the different states of matter and how they can change. We have been learning lots of new vocabulary, such as molecules and atoms. We have mainly been exploring mixtures and completing a range of experiments, such as 'Lava in a Cup', 'Dancing Raisins' and 'Colour Changing Milk'. We also explored chromatography using basic felt tip markers. We were surprised by how many different colours we could see separate out onto the paper towel.

In Writing, we have been learning about the different writing structures. So far this term we have been working on writing a 'Moment in Time' and also 'Procedural/Instructional' writing. Below are some examples of our instructional writing. The motivations were both from Roald Dahl books, The Witches, and George's Marvellous Medicine.

How to Poison a Witch

1. Grab a bottle of poison and head into the kitchen.

2. Sneak across the high shelf with all the spices on it, until you are right above the soup.

3. Pull the cork off the bottle and drop it to test your aim.

4. If the cork does not land in the soup, grab a ladle and gently put the bottle onto the end of the ladle.

5. Check if the coast is clear, and pour the poison in the soup.

6. Celebrate quickly and run behind the spices to hide so you don't get caught.

7. Watch the witch eat the soup and get poisoned.

Warning - Don't get caught or you will get your tail chopped off! Also, don't mistake the poison for being a drink.

We have been enjoying our Play Is the Way games this term. One in particular has been a good challenge for us - Ball Countdown. We have talked together as a class about what good communication looks like in a team situation. We have been asking - are we talking at people or to/with them? This can be a challenge. We showed some good perseverance with this game and it was great to see some success as we kept practicing.
