Technology Department Update

Paula Christensen —

We have had some fantastic outcomes being developed over Term One - we are looking forward to seeing what comes next.

The Technology Department incorporates a number of subject areas - Food, Textiles, Hard Materials, DVC, Digital and Hospitality. We have a number of teachers who work both full and part time within the department covering these subjects - Mrs Cheryl Muirson, Mr Nigel Dodge, Mr Steve McKelvey, Mrs Heidi Lovatt and myself, Paula Christensen.

We try to offer our students many different learning opportunities within our classes and this can be seen by the outcomes developed, and as often the case in food, nothing coming home as it has already been eaten.

Hard Materials and Textiles are only offered at Year 7-8 currently. They rotate through these areas along with Food and Digital Tech on a termly basis and have two hours per week in each area. We try to allow the students to have as much input into what they make so whatever they take home they are proud to show off.

Digital Tech is currently offered to Years 7-10 and then moves to an online platform for NCEA. From Scratch to coding python the students' skills far outweigh anything I have ever learnt!

Food Tech and Hospitality are offered up until NCEA Level 3. From preserves to two course meals and recipe books, the students are exposed to lots of ingredients and a wide range of techniques and processes.
