Oxford Area School Boys and Girls Agricultural Club results 2020

Rochelle Welch —

This year 29 students competed at our annual Boys and Girls Agricultural Club event.

We had a wonderful collection of calves, lambs, chickens, a duck and two kids. The students were judged on a written project, care and attention, leading and handling and knowledge.

The students were all presented with t-shirts from our very generous sponsor B.A Murray Agricultural Contractors. They wore them proudly and looked very smart.

Every student received a goody bag and a prize from the raffle table and this was made possible because of the hard work of Michelle Maginness who sources the prizes from her vast network to ensure every child is rewarded for their hard work in preparing their pets for the day.

Once again we received support from our wider community with a wonderful panel of judges and people who ran the modules for our team event.

Many thanks to Mel Brooker, Ivan Evans, Andrew Stokes, Michelle Maginness and Hillary Cooper for judging the animal classes and giving their time and sharing their knowledge, it was very much appreciated.

Thanks also goes to Mark Cooper, Boyd Slemint, Sarah Welch, Jack Robson, Hillary Cooper, Michelle Maginness and Jacqui Patterson for running the modules. This year we had six modules and six teams made up of students from Years 1-8. The modules included building a shelter to house a lamb or calf, setting up a break fence, identifying meat cuts, learning about how to use a nait scanner and scales, identifying different flours/milk powders/cornmeal by smell, texture and mixing with water and how to fill out an ‘Animal Status Declaration’ form.

The object of these modules is to work as a team with spot prizes given to students displaying leadership skills, the school values of caring, respect, responsibility and the added bonus of learning new skills and knowledge about the agricultural sector.
