Oxford gains First place in the Tasman Regional Agrikids Competition.
On Saturday the 19th of February William Shore, William Glassford and Elizabeth Cooper entered their team Oxford Dudes and Dudette into the Agrikids Tasman Regional Final at Springston. This runs alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final.
On the day, they competed against 28 other teams doing a range of Modules with each module worth 10 points towards their final score. The Modules included things like Biosecurity, fire safety, feed management, insurance risk, knowledge of two-wheeler motorbikes, and identifying mystery substances in a box. This was run by Lincoln University.
After the Modules are completed the top scoring teams go on to a whiteboard and after each round some teams are taken off and some were added. It was a nervous two-hour wait with fingers crossed to see if the team made the top seven. The team were very excited when realising they had made it and got to compete in the race off.
The race off had 9 components with points for speed and accuracy. The points are then added to their module score for the overall winner. It was a nervous wait but it was all worth it when their names were called out taking out First place for Tasman Region.
The team will now compete in the NZ finals in Whangarei in July.
Also on the day Nicholas and Connor Slemint competed in the Junior Young Farmer competition. This was a tough competition which they thoroughly enjoyed.
