Years 9 and 10 Learning - Term 4

Sharyn Varcoe —

Back in early March we confirmed the direction of Years 9 and 10 learning for semester two this year.

Due to COVID-19 the planned distribution of information was not able to take place. In light of the different beginning of Term 2 we have experienced, the planned changes to the Years 9 and 10 curriculum have been delayed until Term 4 this year. Your young person will continue with their original timetable throughout Term 3.

On Monday during assembly our years 9 and 10 students were reminded of the upcoming curriculum changes. The key message was that it is "how we learn, rather than what we learn" that will best prepare all learners to adapt and grow effectively to meet the opportunities presented by a new world of work. Through developing and strengthening learners' personal, interpersonal and cognitive competencies it will allow them to cope in an uncertain, ever-shifting world and excel. These competencies include critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, citizenship and character.

The Years 9 and 10 programme for Term 4 will include both compulsory English and Mathematics, to ensure our students are progressing well with their literacy and numeracy skills. All other learning areas are optional. Students will have increased choice in their programme and will be able to choose three 'electives' such as Science, Drama or Social Sciences. As well as these choices, students will also be given choice in 'connected' learning which will be collaborative and across different learning areas such as Health & Phyiscal Education and Technology for example.

Next Monday, students will receive an email that outlines the different electives they may choose. This information will also be available as a paper copy at our school reception. We strongly encourage you to sit down with your young person and discuss their preferred choices and the reasons behind them.

As a parent and care-giver you will receive a google form via the email address we have recorded for you on Monday 22nd June at 5pm. This needs to be completed with your young person prior to Friday 26th June. In the form they will be asked to rank their six top choices for 'electives', this is to ensure that we can cater to student choice as much as possible.

There will be more information early in Term 3 about these changes included 'connected' learning choices available.
