Waimakariri Youth MP

Paula Christensen —

Matt Doocey, MP for Waimakariri visited Oxford Area School last week to talk to senior students about how they could become the next Youth MP for the Waimakariri District.

Youth Parliament is held every three years, and is a unique opportunity for young New Zealanders to learn first-hand about our democracy, influence government decision-making, and have their voices heard.

Matt came and spoke with interested students about what the role involved and the opportunities that it provided for Ellie Tizzard, former Head Student at Oxford Area School, who was the last representative for the Waimakariri.

Matt was clear that it is not important to be affiliated with a specific Political Party - but the enthusiasm to be an advocate for the youth from the district, as well as having ideas about issues impacting young people in our unique environment, was key to being a successful Youth MP.

I reached out to Ellie for words of wisdom to students who might be interested in applying to be the next Youth MP. She said, "Being the Youth MP for the Waimakariri has been a great learning opportunity and I have met some amazing people. I was given opportunities to take part in things I would never have done otherwise...I would encourage anyone who is considering it to just do it!"
