Bus Safety Update and Information 2024

Mr Thompson —

This is an important message from both the school and our Bus company Tranzit. If you have any akonga (students) who travel on our school buses please take the time to read this article and visit the websites.

We treat the use of school buses as an extension of our school. We expect students to be respectful, responsible, positive and caring at all times.

We also want to remind all travellers on the road, that the speed limit is 20 kilometres per hour when passing a school bus on either side of the road.

During the mornings, it is important that our Akonga are visible to the bus drivers and other road users. The school has a small supply of hi-vis vests for students to use, we have the possibility of getting more if required. If you require a Hi-Vis could you contact justin@oxford.school.nz for me to manage this process. We highly recommend that our young people wear a vest so they can be seen on the side of the road on these darker mornings.

When getting on the bus, please have your akonga wait in the designated place or in a clear zone (with no hazards like power poles, drains, or trees), off the sealed road, and well back from the road. Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before getting on.

An essential feature of how the buses operate is we ask those students who are met by their parents at the bus stop, to remain in their seats until their parents are on the same side of the road as the bus. This is to avoid young people getting off the bus and dashing across the road to their parents. To assist with this please, parents/caregivers, park safely on the same side of the road as the bus, so our akonga do not need to try and cross busy roads in our area.

In the afternoons if your akonga are travelling home on the bus they must be ticked off on the bus roll. If they have a friend going home on the bus with them they need to have their name added to that bus roll. In Years 1-8 we need to know in advance of play dates or extra students on the bus. This is to inform the drivers and make sure they get on the right bus and dropped off at the right spot. Year 9 and up students need to let Mr Riach or Mr T know out at the bus and please make sure the names are added to the bus roll. In all cases it is at the discretion of the Bus Controller if this can happen. The main reason for no would be based on too many students on the bus.

Please go over this information with your akonga to keep them safe on the bus network.

All information regarding buses can be found on our website at http://www.oxford.school.nz/buses.html which includes some good MOE information.

All bus students and caregivers need to complete and sign the School Transport code of conduct. We are in the process of getting akonga all signed up to the new code of conduct. Thanks to those parents and caregivers who have signed and completed a code of conduct form. This can be found at the school office. We will be in the next two weeks trying to get the last of these completed.

Once printed and completed please drop it into Rachel Stagg or Lucille Riach at the school office if you have not completed this paperwork.

If you have any questions regarding the busses or concerns please feel free to contact Andrew Riach or me (Justin Thompson), the phone number found on the school website.
