BYOD Year 9-13 2025

Sharyn Whitlow —

Do you have rangatahi in Year 9 and above for 2025? Our Year 9-13 students bring their own digital devices (BYOD) to school for their learning.

In order to best support your child’s learning, the device must -

  • Include a physical keyboard (this may be a separate bluetooth keyboard)

  • Have a screen size that is comfortable to use for extended periods of time

  • Have a battery life that allows students to use it for a full day (up to 5 hours of classes)

  • Be able to access the Google suite. For example Google classroom, drive, docs, etc.

  • Be easily transportable and able to connect to our BYOD network

Recommended devices include Chromebooks, laptops and tablets with a physical keyboard.

From now through until late January many retailers have good discounts and deals for school appropriate devices which families may wish to take advantage of prior to the 2025 school year.
While it is a personal choice for our parents and caregivers in regards to where they purchase a device from, Oxford Area School also works with Cyclone as a supplier of BYOD devices for our school community. To access their online portal go to byod.cyclone.co.nz and select Oxford Area School.

The portal includes a range of device options including Chromebooks, laptops and a tablet option. As well as the device itself, Cyclone also has storage cases available for purchase. A comprehensive three year Material Damage Insurance package (no excess) is also available through Cyclone. We strongly recommend that you consider this insurance package, as it covers both accidental damage and loss of the device. Warranty, insurance claims and IT support are all directly with Cyclone.

Any questions about BYOD, including if you have difficulty accessing a device for your child should be directed to Ms. Sharyn Whitlow, Deputy Principal Years 7-13 in the first instance, sharyn@oxford.school.nz
