What a night at Wearable Arts for this group of Year 7/8 students!

Julie Evans —

Following our Matariki focus day, the syndicate decided to support Jane Anderson and her team by entering some costumes for the category- Light It Up. This fitted with Matariki and the tamariki were keen to give it a go.

On Monday 28 August the JE/MR team sorted themselves into groups of 4/5 to discuss and design their possible costume on a template. Next they were able to explore, trial, change and finally complete their entry. On Friday 2 September the NT/CF followed a similar process to create their costumes. Each team made a catwalk so the model from each group could display their mahi. All enjoyed viewing everyone's designs.

From this, we selected five costumes from the Year 7/8 syndicate to enter in the North Canterbury Wearable Arts. On Saturday night, 17 September the students really enjoyed the opportunity to view all the other contestants across the whole competition and the amazing talent shown in the wide variety of costumes paraded on stage. Though no placing was gained, they had lots of fun, encouraged one another, and were a pleasure to spend the evening with.

Special thanks to Jane Anderson and her team for all of their preparation, organisation and running this for all keen competitors.
