Queenstown Mega Trip 2021
This year the ABM, Geography and History classes went down to Queenstown for the opportunity to take part in tourist activities, do some research into Gold Mining, Tourism and Land Use. All this work was done in a very picturesque setting.
This term the Year 12/13 Geography class, the Year 11-13 History class and the Year 12/13 ABM Classes travelled down to Queenstown for an amazing experience and learning opportunity. The activities the students were able to take part in included AJ Hackett Bungy, Shotover Jet, Skyline Gondola and Luge. They also got to see Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka as Tourist destinations in this Covid world. While down in Queenstown the Geography and ABM students did research into land use in Queenstown, look at the Queenstown Marathon and the Sustainability of Queenstown as a tourist destination. This group had a lovely talk from Arrowtown Lakes District Museum which gave them the history of tourism development in the Queenstown region. While that was going on the History students had an amazing time in the archives and museum studying various aspects of the Gold mining history in the region.
The area was very interesting for me on this trip. I have been travelling to the region for almost 20 years. This year Queenstown was a ghost town with very few people there. Arrowtown however was a very busy place as was Wanaka. It was great seeing domestic tourists enjoying these places.
All the students learnt a lot from their time away and really got to experience some awesome activities that Queenstown has to offer. As one of the leaders of the group I would like to thank the students who worked hard and really took every opportunity while away on this trip. I would also like to thank Mrs Gilpin and Mrs Don for their help and support to make this trip happen.
