Making Clay Pinch Pots

Deborah Covert —

Our Unit of Inquiry is based on the true story of 'The Water Princess'. Its about a little girl in Africa who walks many kilometres with her mother to collect the water each day for the family. She carries the water in a clay pot upon her head and that's why the book is called The Water Princess because the pot is her crown. So today we made our own pinch pots out of clay. The children had to follow a procedure in order to be successful. They enjoyed getting their hands dirty and were creative with their designs as well as persevering to complete their task. You may want to discuss with your child the importance of water and why we need to conserve it.
