Friday Night Senior Basketball
During Terms 2 and 3, we had four teams participating in the School Sport Canterbury Friday Night Basketball competition.
This was a great season for the teams with no Covid restrictions impacting on the competition.
After 10 weeks of round robin games, finals were held on Friday 18 August. On the following Friday, an Inter-House basketball competition and Basketball prize giving was held at the GP Hall, with a number of students receiving MVP (Most Valuable Player) and MIP (Most Improved Player) awards for their achievements throughout the season.
The Year 9 Boys had an unfortunate run with teams defaulting to them mid season but finished strongly with top 4 playoffs and they placed 4th in their grade. The boys benefited from weekly trainings with the team improving throughout the season.

MIP Talan Lovatt
The Intermediate Girls went through the season unbeaten and played a STAC team in the final, winning this and placing top of their grade. The girls were always positive and respectful and worked well together as a team.
Coach Andrew Tizzard and Manager Julie Tizzard
MVP Charlotte Shelley/Jorja Tizzard
MIP Phoebe Minchin
The Intermediate Boys were also unbeaten and finished top of their grade. This was a large team of 11 players but the boys managed this well and were able to give it heaps on the court knowing that there were plenty of subs on the bench.
Coach Stephen Manikan
MVP Nicholas McKinney
MIP Harlem Bowers, Timothy Manikan, Reuben Keats
The Senior Boys team remained relatively unchanged from the previous year as the intention was to take this team who had done well in the Div 3 grade and challenge them in the Div 1/2 grade. Following the grading games, Oxford was placed in the Div 1 section. The boys had some great games, coming through with the most wins to finish top of the table after the round robin. They met Te Aratai College in the final which was played at Mainpower Stadium in Rangiora. An exciting and close game which Oxford won 60-57, placing first in the Boys Open Div 1 competition. An outstanding achievement! Special thanks to Quentin and Nicky Stagg for driving the van to take the boys to the away games.
Coach Mike Crew
MVP Billy Hollard/Noah Crew
MIP Jon Smoothy
Team Player Award Rico Shelley
As well as the team awards, an additional award was handed out at the prize-giving. This was awarded to a student who had achieved highly in their sport at school (and club level) and gave back to basketball (across the school) through their service.
Outstanding Achievement and Service Award: Nicholas McKinney
Thanks to the coaches and managers for your time and expertise through out the season. The students all benefited from the weekly trainings.
The games could not have gone ahead without our fantastic team of Officials. A huge thank you to our referees/floor controllers: Charlotte Shelley, Rico Shelley, Nicholas McKinney, Alex McKinney, Dominic Mullis, Mark Shelley, Shaugn Kilgour and Peter Schasching and also Chris McKinney who assisted most weeks on the score bench.
Thanks also to the parents who came along and supported the students and assisted with transport for away games.
Inter-House Basketball- Congratulations to Kaka for winning this with Tui placing second.
