PE/OED/HTH Term 3 Update

Kieran Rae —

What's going on in our space?

Student voice - Zara Chittenden

This semester I am in 2 P.E classes,P.E. Leaders and Adventure Education. I really enjoy both these classes as we do something different and new every class.

In P.E Leaders we are learning how to develop our social responsibility in P.E.We have been doing this by playing a number of different games and soon will be filling out a self assessment on how we contributed to the class.

In Adventure Education we have been doing some orienteering around the school in groups while learning how to use a map and coordinates. This class can get quite competitive which is really good and makes everything a competition. I feel like in this class everyone has a strong friendship with most people which makes it a good supportive environment for everyone.

In FBM we have been learning about Hauora and what food is good / bad for you. In Fbm I enjoy doing the practical part of things such as capture the flag, hogs and hounds plus go home stay home. My favorite sport is rugby and sometimes netball. The cooking side of Fbm we have made so far, bliss balls and smoothies. The other day we went for a walk to connect with the environment and our surroundings plus to work on our physical well being.

ABM Update - Term 3

This term we have been working on our performance in an applied setting through skiing/snowboarding and each student's own sport. Most already compete in netball, rugby or basketball so with the help and support of coaches and managers this assessment is quite an enjoyable experience.

With help from Beth Froud and Samara Wylie we have also been able to get out for some mountain biking trips. Firstly to Rakahuri Trail along the Ashley River in Rangiora where some of us did some off-roading led by Noah Crew; experience some adventure racing styles! Great fun and lots of mud!! We have also explored navigation through Bottle Lake Forest tracks which is deceivingly difficult although it is set out in a grid-like system. This is all preparation to complete blue trails at the Christchurch Adventure Park on the 7th of September to complete our Level 3 mountain biking assessments.

Our final Hikoi for the year is to climb Mount Oxford on the 14th of September where students will be performing their pepeha. This is an exciting celebration of the adventures we have covered this year in Adventure Based Management as our philosophy was to physically complete our pepeha; A traditional Māori introduction of yourself. It tells people who you are, linking you to the land (we have discovered the surrounding Oxford area), mountain (maunga), river(awa) , sea (moana), tribe, subtribe, whakapapa (genealogy) and marae.

2PED

In term 3 learners in this class have completed a mud run and an evaluation of a training programme. To finish the year this class will be analysing the impact of an event on themselves, others and society. Some of the topics that they are looking at are the Rugby World Cup, the Basketball World Cup, the recently held FIFA Women's World Cup and the finals run by the New Zealand Warriors.

1PED

This class has recently completed a unit where the looked at influences on people's participation in activities. To do this they played in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament and completed a biomechanical analysis of a skill in the sport. They also discussed how whānaungatanga or kotahitanga impacted them throughout the unit. To finish the year in this class we have been undertaking a unit using the gymnastics gear, so far students have performed routines and taken part in Oxford Ninja Warrior.

It has been a privilege to have journeyed with our classes this year, they have all grown, learnt physical skills and developed within themselves.
