Years 9-13 Cellphones
Cellphones are a common part of life for many of our Year 9 to 13 students. As a parent, what do you need to know about the use of cellphones in class?
Students in Year 9 and above may bring their cellphone to school and it is their responsibility to keep it safe and use it appropriately. Cell phones can be an easy way of recording information in the form of a photo for instance, such as when our students are writing a learning journal post about their learning.
The following rules for all Years 9-13 classes were co-constructed by students and staff for 2020:
1. Cellphones may only be used for learning when the teacher says you may
2. Cellphones must be out of sight - in your pocket or school bag, unless your teacher has asked for them to be elsewhere
3. IF you use a cellphone for a non-learning purpose / without the teacher’s permission the following will happen -
First time - the cellphone will go on the teacher’s desk. You may collect at the end of the period
Second time - the cellphone will be taken to the school reception. You may collect it from there at the end of the day
Third time - the cellphone will be taken to the school reception. Your parent will be rung and they will have to collect the cellphone at a time convenient to them
How can you support your young person to use their cellphone appropriately in class-time?
Please do not text, phone or message their cellphone during class hours. Young people feel conflicted if their parent is requiring an answer, yet the teacher has said it is device free learning time. If you have an urgent message, please contact the school reception on 033124197 and the message will be given to your child.
