Canterbury Primary Schools Athletics Championships were held on Wednesday 30 November at Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub.

Julie Evans —

A very early start for the five athletes who were selected for the Rakahuri team to compete against all the different sports zone throughout Canterbury and West Coast.

As Phoebe Minchin was competing in the Year 8 Long Jump at 9 am this meant leaving Oxford by 7:45 am. Phoebe enjoyed the experience and as her nerves settled she finished with a pleasing final jump. Mason Hayes-Walford competed in the Year 5 60 m sprint and Long Jump positively gaining valuable exposure to a massive sporting event. Long distance running is Freedom Kennett's passion so she competed in the Year 5 1,000m race. Unfortunately, Nathaniel Sillars was sick so was not able to go to run in the Year 8 1200m race. Matilda Hart competed in the Year 7 60m sprint giving it her best burst of energy! Special thanks to Tanya Wells who accompanied the team for the day, and to the parents/whānau who came to support them too.

Though none of the students gained a top 10 placing, they all gave it their best effort, competing along with about 32 competitors in each event. An amazing opportunity to watch some true young talent on display who will be future NZ team members, and to compete in impressive facilities. Ka pai to all.
