Mathematics at Oxford Area School in Years 9-13

Tara Egerton —

"When will I ever use this?" We have been working on using real life examples in our Maths lessons to learn new concepts so we can see why the skills might be useful.

The Year 9 & 10's are currently looking at Statistics. They have all been role modelling being Forensic Statisticians and helping the police solve a crime. We are team teaching this term which we are looking forward to.

In week 3 of Term 1 Class 9/10A looked at Covid-19 and were predicting what might happen to the numbers.......even we didn't expect what did happen!

The Year 11's are all working on individual pathways. They have been improving their ability to self manage their learning. This model worked especially well during lockdown, although we hadn't planned on it. So far we are seeing an increase in the percentage of Merit/ Excellence work being submitted. We also have all students following Achievement standards, with no-one doing the Numeracy standards which is a first for the school.

The Year 12's have just completed a standard looking at different types of graphs. They have been looking at amazing architecture around the world, and seeing how their knowledge of graphs can aid the drawing of some of the curves. This is especially relevant with modern technology such as laser cutters, as these students now have an idea of how to program a machine to draw amazing curves.

Earlier this year, in Term 1, the Year 12 Maths students spent two  days in Hanmer Springs running experiments that they had designed. We were lucky enough to be joined by Amuri Area School which increased the number of participants as well as added new and different experiments.
