The Water Princess Assembly

Deborah Covert —

The story of the Water Princess written by Susan Verde was our catalyse to ignite the children's curiosity. This book is based on the childhood experience of Georgie Badiel.

We are so proud of our Year 1-2 students performing brilliantly in front of a large audience. They had been practising for weeks on the Water songs and learning Coding which involves giving instructions and directions on how to solve a problem by using unplugged digital technology. ie. which is using a grid system and directional arrows to get from a starting point to a end point.

Our demonstration was unrehearsed. The (Bot) Water Princess, Tester, (the person who gives instruction and works out if there is a 'bug' in the system and the Programmer (the person who designs the programme). Coding is new to the New Zealand Curriculum therefore we embraced it by incorporating it into our portrayal of the Water Princess.

The entire performance was based on our Inquiry regarding 'Water'. The children have learnt the importance of looking after this scarce resource and the pollution of our waterways and how water is used in different environments.
