Waitangi Day celebrations and highlights at school
Week 2, Term 1, 2021
I do hope everybody enjoyed our nation's Waitangi Day, marking the signing of the treaty on the 6th February 1840. This day is very significant in our development as a country and an important event to discuss with our tamariki. As a school, we embrace the three P's often talked about when discussing Te Tiriti o Waitangi. In our school this means:
Partnership
The partnership involves working together with iwi, hapū, whānau and Māori communities to develop strategies for Māori education.
Protection
Protection means actively protecting Māori knowledge, interests, values, and other tāonga. Identity, language, and culture are important expressions of what it means to be a culturally located learner.
Participation
Increased participation and success by Māori through the advancement of Māori educational initiatives, including education in Te Reo Māori, consistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
This week I had a chance to catch up with two of our junior student leaders - Year 8's Mika and Alexis. Check out the video of our chat.
