The Education Conversation, Kōrero Mātauranga

As many of you will be aware this year is a year of national educational review.  The education conversation is well underway and as stakeholders we all need to be a part of it.

Children, young people, parents, teachers, employers, iwi, families and whānau all need a voice in this conversation about building not just a better education system, but the world’s best.

Please follow this link to the online survey.

The other major review underway is of our national secondary school qualification - the National  Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) which currently starts at year 11 and finishes at year 13. A Ministerial Advisory Group has the process well underway and they are currently focusing of six big opportunities to start the conversation:

  • Creating space at NCEA Level 1 for powerful learning
  • Strengthening literacy and numeracy
  • Ensuring NCEA Levels 2 and 3 support good connections beyond schooling
  • Making it easier for teachers, schools and kura to refocus on learning
  • Ensuring the Record of Achievement tells us about learner' capabilities
  • Dismantling barriers to NCEA

Why is this review so important? Between 2020 and 2030 over 500,000 students will complete an NCEA qualification.

The Ministry of Education are encouraging communities, students and schools to engage in this review. For students of all ages there are a number of competitions available to gather voice and as a school we will hold a community hui to gather feedback for a school submission into the review.

We are very excited to open our doors to our community and prospective families on Monday 2nd July. There are day time opportunities and an evening opportunity to come in and view the school. During the day guided tours depart from 9am, 10am, 11.30am and 12.30pm. And in the evening guided tours will depart from the reception area at various times from 6.30pm to 8pm. The tours are student led and you will have an opportunity to talk with teachers and students throughout the school. This is also open to existing Oxford Area School families to come in and take a look around.
