Update from the Digital Technologies Department

Tahi Rua Toru Tech Digital Challenge

This term Year 10 Digital Technologies students participated in the above challenge.
Teams had fun using digital technologies to solve problems that they identified in the school or local community.

Small teams of 3-4 students completed a project-based challenge and were partnered with an industry mentor Mr Tony Lyne, Chief Architect and Projects Manager at Deptive. Ideas were shared and discussed and students were given advice on how to progress.

Progress was recorded in an online blog and teams created a project plan, executed it and produced a short report at the end.

Teams who successfully complete the Challenge will get a certificate and a team of judges will select the best projects to go to the Regional Championship.

Projects

GAG Team identified the problem of global warming and environmental issues and created an app EARTH-X, which remind users of what they could do to help the environment, for example recycling, saving water and using reusable items.

The Three Musketeers have completed an app revolving around First Aid. They identified that not everyone can perform simple first aid skills such as CPR and Heimlich Manoeuvre. Their first aid app is straight forward with step by step instructions and includes visual aids to assist a user in an emergency. The app is easy to use, while aesthetically pleasing and professional looking.

CeeKay created an app, called Check-in, that helps students and teachers being more organised and save class time with the roll-taking process. The app allows students to check in into class using a QR code when they arrive. Another element to the app is it has a student’s timetable built in and reminds students of their next class, be more organised and save time for class.

Happy Life created an app to help people in the community maintain a healthy and happy well-being. Covid made us realise how important it is to maintain a healthy well-being, so this is why they decided to create this app. The Happy Life app focuses on physical, mental and emotional well-being.

TicTac created an app called Friendship Teatails. This app stores information about your friends like their birthdays, emails, emergency contacts. This is to help us remember our friends' details and if they are in dangerous situations we would be able to help by contacting their emergency person or find their medication details.

‘Bus in Bus out’ is the Lans group app, targeted at bus students and in development the wider Manawatu community. This app will help bus users get to their buses on time, it also reminds them of the bus fares, bus time, bus number and how long until the bus arrives at the stop.
