Centenary Celebrations

PNGHS —

In 1902 a District High School was established in Palmerston North for both boys’ and girls’ secondary education.

In 1920 they split and the girls’ school was founded on the Fitzherbert Avenue site and officially opened on 13th September 1920. Miss Clara Beatrice Mills was appointed as the first ‘lady’ principal of Palmerston North Girls’ High School and so began a long and rich heritage of teaching and learning. While the curriculum may have changed since 1920, the ethos of the power of girls’ learning hasn’t.

We didn’t want to let the opportunity of celebrating our 100 year milestone as a stand alone school for girls pass without some form of celebration. To that effect, a small but committed group of teachers, along with our student archivist, Leah Crisp, began meeting regularly in the principal’s office to plan the celebrations. With the shadow of covid hanging over us we knew we had to keep it small and confined to our school ‘bubble’. For that reason, two days were planned for the last week of term, one a Staff and Student Fun Day on Wednesday 23 September and the other for Alumni and Special guests on Thursday 24 September.

Staff and Student Fun Day saw many staff dress up in early 1900s or 1920s costume and/or school uniforms through the ages. We had an extended lunch time with a picnic on the lawn listening to the staff and student bands; along with 1920s fun games on the lawn including hula hoop; Egg and Spoon and Three Legged Races plus Tug of War House Competition. The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day; especially the ice creams and celebratory chocolate cake. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school and simply have ‘FUN’, and many thanks to all who contributed to the lovely atmosphere of the day - even the ducks got into the action.

Thursday 24 September was a more formal occasion with 90 former staff and principals; alumni and special guests coming together to enjoy a speech from our special guest, Joy Cowley (alumnus 1951-1953). Joy spoke about how important Palmerston North Girls’ High School had been to her. With a difficult family life and coming in from Foxton each day, PNGHS had mentored her and given her the confidence to become a writer. We had items from our Kapa Haka, Gospel Choir, String Quartet and Cantatrice. Joy planted a Titoki tree, organised for us by Dr Meikle, in the grounds and we had school tours. The Alumni and former teachers and principals enjoyed catching up with old friends and seeing the school in action. We had a wonderful morning tea made for us by the Hospitality students - many thanks to our Head of ACT, Jenny Slade who organised this. Jane Boocock, our Textiles teacher designed tee shirts, bags and tea towels and these are available to be ordered through the school. Many thanks to Kirsten Gibbs and her organising committee - both days were very special and a wonderful way to celebrate our 100th birthday as a stand alone school for girls.
