WiE CAN

PNGHS —

From 17-21 January, I represented PNGHS at WiE Can (Women in Engineering) down at the University of Canterbury to get an understanding of the engineering degree as well as enjoy a great opportunity.

Whilst down there we stayed in the uni dorms and did workshops in the engineering laboratories getting a full experience of the campus itself. The camp consisted of 3 workshops a day, over 3 days showcasing the majors.  These workshops included things like:  Civil - where we built earthquake-proof structures which were tested on a mini earthquake generator.  Chemical - where we electrolyzed water and produced gas as well as converted blueberries into solar power.  Software - where we programmed a board to light up in different sequences, aerospace controlling a rockets movements.

At night we also had fun activities such as an amazing race around the UC campus, city tour, movie night and a final night party! This camp included 50 girls from all across New Zealand with an interest in engineering, maximum of one from each school which meant you got to know a wide variety of people forming close friendships. It was a great experience and really opened my eyes to the different disciplines of engineering and where it can take you, shown by the inspiring women who came to talk to us about their lifestyle and jobs as engineers and all majors.
