PNGHS Music Competitions

PNGHS —

This year, despite having to delay our competition, we were able to offer students the opportunity to compete in our Piano, Voice and (the inaugural) Instrumental Competition.

We ran these competitions alongside each other, and for the first time ran a heats round with video submissions and live heats in the Library for those that preferred to perform in person. It was wonderful to hear such a range of styles, groups, levels across all sections. Of the 72 student entries we narrowed it down to three finalists in each section (Solo voice, Group voice, Intermediate Piano, Intermediate Instrumental, Advanced Piano and Advanced Instrumental). We held a Live Finals evening in July, and had two adjudicators, James Tait-Jamieson and Jamie Oemcke. They awarded the following:

Solo Voice
1st: Laila Lees-Galloway (Y11)
2nd: Charlotte McMillan (Y12)
3rd: Grace Fakahau (Y12)

Group Voice
1st: Celestial Brown (Y13), Rhema Brown (Y11) and Roseta Leau (Y9)

Intermediate Instrumental
1st: Eden Brown – Bass Guitar (Y12)
2nd: Chamasha Kaluarachchige – Flute (Y11)
3rd: Reinhelda Gowthaman – Violin and Linn Herzig – Piano (both Y9)

SmokefreeRockquest

This year bands weren’t able to compete at Live heats or Regional finals, instead they had to submit a video recording. Focus. and Player 2 entered the competition under difficult circumstances, videoing their original songs. Congratulations to Eden Brown (Y12) who received the Musicianship Award, and along with Lizzy MacKay (Y12) and Vivvy Tong (Y12) won the ZM Best Song Award.
