Evolocity Winners

Mr Mike Wright - Technology Teacher —

Congratulations to the Evolicity Challenge Winning Team "When a Man Loves a Wooden".

"Evolocity" is an engineering competition in which students design and build an electric vehicle, whilst trying to address sustainability issues and show innovation.

Year 10 students Hayley Manning, Trent Mason, Starr Edwards, Lucas Righton, Wade Slabbert, and Mia Gray, built a solar charging electric bike mostly out of wood with a steampunk theme, entirely as an extracurricular club.

After months of hard work, it finally got going "under its own steam" with rider Wade in mid-October. A scrutineer from Evolocity then came to check the bike met safety requirements and give it its "WOF" to allow it to compete. Electrics, brakes and construction were all checked to make sure they met specifications. It is always a scary time, but it got the "OK" from the scrutineer.

Before the 'race day' they added some top-secret electronics to help them in the innovation category. Hayley Manning Y10 was the resident 'expert' in programming and all things Arduino and designed some cool sensing technology to keep riders safe and warn them of dangers.

Teams from colleges across the country competed at the Evolocity Regional Finals in November. The prizegiving for the Bay of Plenty Regional Finals was announced via zoom on Monday 8 November and the team did really well.

Of the 13 schools/colleges from across the Bay of Plenty competing they placed:

  • Showstoppers / Best in Show category: 1st place
  • The Presentation / Interviews about their bike: 2nd place
  • Drag Race: 3rd place
  • Gymkhana obstacle race: 4th place

And, 2nd place team overall for the Bay of Plenty

What an amazing effort!!
