Learning Local Legends

Miss Erin Farrell - Teacher —

The Kapahaka and Tama Tu, Tama Ora groups went on a hikoi up Te Rae o Pāpāmoa. We were joined by a local Kaumatua, Colin Reeder Nga Potiki and Whareoteriri Rahiri Waitaha to share their historical knowledge of the area.

The Tama Tu, Tama Ora group had a focus of note taking. Here is a retell of a local legend.

Mauao

Murdoch, Quin, Willem, Kody

Once a little mountain with no name loved a lady mountain called Puwhenua. She loved a different mountain named Otanewainuku.

So the unnamed mountain admitted his love for her but he was rejected. He was drowned in sadness and he called in the Patupaiarehe (fairies) to drag him to the sea where he could drown. But the Patupaiarehe were too slow and they didn't pull him far enough before dawn broke. If they got caught in the sun they would turn to rock. And that's how he got its name today. (Mauao - caught by light).
