Derived Grade Exams - Years 11-13

Mr Shea McEvoy - Deputy Principal —

NCEA Derived Grade Exams for all Year 11, 12 and 13 students were due to take place over weeks 8 and 9 of this term, 17 September – 24 September. Due to Covid Alert Level Restrictions these exams have been POSTPONED, with new dates to be advised once we have clarity over future Alert Levels.

These exams are designed as a formative assessment opportunity and to ensure timely and meaningful feedback as tauira / learners progress towards external NZQA Examinations in November.

These exams also serve as a 'Derived Grade Assessment Opportunity'. This means candidates for externally assessed achievement standards (Externals) who have suffered from a temporary illness, non-permanent disability or other event close to or during external assessments, which has significantly impaired their performance, may apply to the school to supply a result based on these Derived Grade Exams.

What does this mean?

Most Senior students will be on "Study Leave" over the exam period (dates TBA) and will not be required to attend class. A limited number of students will not be granted study leave and will be attending a supported study class during this time.

Note* If students are unable to attend an exam due to a medical reason, parents must contact the school.

A derived grade is...

A derived grade is available for a candidate who for an approved reason:

  • has been unable to attend an NZQA external examination or submit a completed externally assessed portfolio
  • attended an NZQA external examination session and their performance has been significantly impaired
  • has been unable to attend an external assessment because of selection for National Representation in a sport, academic or cultural event.

Approved reasons include:

  • a temporary acute non-recurring illness
  • trauma – a significantly disturbing or distressing experience
  • misadventure - an event beyond a student’s control or an exceptional circumstance
  • a sudden and significant change to a long-term illness occurring at the time of the examinations

The school provides a grade based on (or derived from) pre-existing authentic, standard-specific evidence produced during the year by the candidate (such as from Derived Grade Examinations).
