Abby takes on the world at youth champs

Lauren Engebretsen —

Abby Gebert Y9 selected to represent New Zealand at IFSC Youth World Champs.

Abby Gebert has just returned from representing New Zealand at IFSC Youth World Champs held in Moscow. There were 699 climbers from 43 countries in 3 age categories competing in 3 disciplines (Lead, Speed and Boulder).

While none of the New Zealanders progressed past the qualifying rounds, it was an awesome experience and they learnt a lot. In the Speed discipline, Abby set a new New Zealand Youth B record of 16.64 seconds up the 15m wall. Sport climbing in New Zealand is still relatively small and just being able to compete on the world stage against the best youth climbers in the world was a huge opportunity.

Speed: 49th out of 60.

Lead: 55 / 66

Boulder: 51 / 67
