Mana Waka

Mr Pere Durie - Associate Principal —

Mana Waka is new to the College this year. All of our students and staff are grouped into four different waka. Students in each waka are from all year levels, Commons and classes.

The four waka are all connected to this area. Mataatua, Tainui, Tākitimu and Te Arawa all came here from Hawaiiki many years ago. The people on these waka came here looking for a new home and new opportunities. Today - nearly one thousand years later - people are still coming to Pāpāmoa for a new home and new opportunities.

At school, each of these waka compete against each other in a number of events. So far these have been Athletics, a Super Seven quiz, a mufti-day to support the local Pāpāmoa Surf Lifesaving club and a Mai Moana Ocean event challenge.

The events throughout the year will have a focus on sporting, cultural, arts and community. This term there is cross-country, another mufti-day fundraiser and a talent quest to compete in. Events later this year will include lego masters, e-sports, Matariki and Dodgeball.

Student leaders in each waka have been named in assembly (see Student Leadership Article) and will help lead their waka and also the different kaupapa. At the end of the year the champion waka will be announced before the senior students complete the year. At this stage of the year, after one term and four events, Tainui are sitting on 11 points, with Mataatua, Tākitimu and Te Arawa all on 13.
