Julia Walmsley —

Our Transition Class recently took part in the Speaking Up course run by People First NZ.

People First is a Disabled People’s Organisation that is led by and for people with learning disability. Their name says it all: 'We are People First – our disability comes second.'

During the course, we learned about the importance of self-advocacy. Self-advocacy means speaking up for ourselves, making our own choices, and having our voices heard. One of the key messages was 'Nothing about us, without us' —a reminder that decisions affecting people with learning disability should always include the person with the learning disability.

The course helped us build confidence and skills so that we can share our ideas, make decisions, and stand up for what matters to us. Our goal is to continue practising these skills in everyday life, so that we can truly speak up for ourselves and be heard.

We are proud of what we have learned and look forward to using our voices to shape our future.

Thanks to Holland and Craig from People First for facilitating a great day for us.
