Service Celebration
On the 17th of October, Papanui High School hosted its annual Service Celebration, recognising the outstanding contributions of students and staff to our school and community.
The event was an opportunity to celebrate the tireless efforts of those who have given their time and energy to service throughout the year. This year’s gathering was bigger than ever before, with a packed library of students, staff, and special guests, including Dame Sue Bagshaw, Papanui Councillor Victoria Henstock and Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board member Emma Norrish.
The Service Council leaders Katie Ward and Megan Bennetts, highlighted the many events students have been involved in, from Relay for Life to City Mission Can Collection, Rubbish pick ups, 40 hour Challenge, Morning Munch, and collections for various charities. Their dedication resulted in raising over $22,000 for various charities, including an impressive $16,596 for the Cancer Society, marking a record-breaking year for the council. The council also acknowledged the incorporation of the Tira points system to encourage and reward student involvement in service activities.
As part of the celebration, two prestigious awards were presented. Josh Rae was named the 2024 Community Service Champion, recognised for his extraordinary volunteer work both within and outside of school. The Pounamu Award, presented by 2023 recipient Maia Jeffs and Dame Sue Bagshaw, was awarded to Ailsa Bianco for her leadership and commitment to service, particularly her organisation of Morning Munch. The event concluded with a morning tea, offering thanks to all the attendees as well as the chance to connect and reflect on the importance of service in our school and community. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making this event a success.
