CSS JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS
On Friday 1st November through to Sunday 3rd November our Junior Boys' Volleyball team competed in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Volleyball Championships at Ngā Puna Wai. This team had only had three games together before entering this tournament and it was amazing to see the improvement in both their skill and communication through the progression of the competition. The team went from strength to strength and had a narrow loss in the semi-final but finished strong in the 3rd vs 4th playoff and took the win, finishing the championships in 3rd place.
Congratulations to the following students who made up the Junior Volleyball team:- Rodge Ablir, Joel Clemenger, Manaia Hurunui, Ethanjeams Rafisura, Adrielle Rebuta, Kleinryan Sicat, Duane Soriano, Marc Soriano, George Townshend, and Tua Tupai.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ POOL COMPETITION
On the 5th and 6th October, Hunter Irvine (Year 12), Daniel Ferreira (Year 12), Cole Piercy (Year 9) and Zachariah Ruiter (Year 9) played in the Secondary Schools' Pool Competition at the Cashmere Club. These four students competed in both the Pairs and Singles divisions. Hunter and Daniel made it through to the top 16 for the pairs but were knocked out in subsequent rounds. Cole finished top 3 in his section of the singles and progressed through to the top 16 of the singles competition. These players only took up pool in Terms 2 and 3 of this year and were up against some very experienced and talented pool players. Hunter, Daniel, and Cole will all compete in another competition on Saturday 9th November at the New Brighton Club.
ZONTA AWARDS EVENING
On Thursday 31st October Papanui High School had was honoured to have six students nominated for Supreme Awards at the 2024 Zonta Awards which were held at the Hornby Club:-
Bax Robinson-Kennard - Contribution to Sports Administration
Josh Rae - Most Outstanding Achievement with a Disability
Cody Lamond - Most Outstanding Achievement with a Disability
Josh Rae, Lee West & Lachlan Oakes, - Most Outstanding Achievement with a Disability (Team)
Jay Xuan Tan - Most Outstanding Achievement in One Sport
CONGRATULATIONS to Baxter Robinson-Kennard who won “Valued Contribution by a young man in an Administrator, Coach. Umpire or Referee role”. A huge congratulations also goes to our Para Relay Team of Josh Rae, Lachlan Oakes and Lee West who won the “Para Team of the Year Category”. This was a great honour for not only the students involved but also Papanui High School.
It was a wonderful evening of celebration, and it was incredibly inspiring to see/hear the achievements of not only our Papanui finalists but also those of our very talented rangatahi across the wider Canterbury region.
STUDENT SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Congratulations to:
Jordy Moore (Year 10) who recently competed in the Regional Secondary Schools’ Duathlon in Southbridge. Jordy competed in the U16 age group finishing in 3rd place.
Hunter Charlett (Year 9) who raced in the Oceania Junior Motorcycle Cup which was the support class for the World MotoGP meeting at Phillip Island, Melbourne on the 19th and 20th October. Hunter qualified 8th in the grid and came away with a 6th place, 2nd place (won this race but was demoted to 2nd place after exceeding the track limits) and an 8th place finish. After this weekend of racing Hunter is now sitting in 3rd place overall for the Championship with one round of racing to go. Well done Hunter.
Dorothy Yek (Year 13) who has recently been offered a spot in the Wellington Phoenix Women’s Reserve team for 2025. Dorothy has had a great season this year playing in the Canterbury Youth team and is in talks with a number of American universities with the possibility of a scholarship.
