Kimi Ora News

Julia Walmsley —

This term is going to be a busy and exciting one in Kimi Ora.

This term, we will be working on bus skills to help students build greater independence and confidence in travelling within the community. Learning how to use public transport safely and responsibly is an important life skill that supports students’ ability to access education, work, and social opportunities as they grow older. Through practising bus skills, we hope students will learn how to read timetables, use the transit app and metro website, identify stops, use of metro cards, and interact appropriately with drivers and other passengers. These experiences help develop problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills, fostering a sense of autonomy and preparing students for real-world situations.

We will be continuing with our wellness walk/runs three times per week. Each Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning.

Many students are getting close to completing their Bronze or Silver Awards. We will continue with volunteering in the Papanui Bush- planting, mulching and weeding. We also have students volunteering at the Burlington Rest Home and making cookies for the Full Bellies Charity. Students also log their swimming/gym, food studies weekly. For our Adventurous Journey, some students will attend an overnight hike this term in order to complete their award.

A group of students will be participating in a Cycle Safety Course provided by the Christchurch City Council Cycle Safe Team. Christchurch's Cycle Safe Programme is considered one of the best in the country and is used as a leading delivery model. The programme includes cycle maintenance and helmet fitting, basic cycling skills, road rules, and on-road cycling. Already we have had our bikes checked and practised some basic cycle skills. After completing the cycle safety course, we will venture out to cycle some of Christchurch's well-known cycle tracks.
