Buzz Jones' Dedication Helps Restore Papanui TocH Athletic Track

Athletics has been a lifelong passion for former Papanui High School student Buzz Jones, spanning an incredible 73 years.

When the Papanui TocH Athletic Club’s track—named in his honour—was badly vandalised, the former club president and life member didn’t hesitate to take action. Determined to help fund repairs, the 88-year-old meticulously sifted through club records and newspaper clippings, reconnecting with past members to rally support. His dedication helped raise $10,000 towards the $400,000 required to resurface the track at Papanui High School.

The club’s fundraising efforts also included quiz nights and sales of cookies, chocolate, and croissants. Securing additional funding was key to reaching the goal, with major contributions coming from:

  • Kiwi Gaming Foundation – $120,000

  • Pub Charity – $50,000

  • New Zealand Community Trust – $50,000

  • Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust – $20,000

  • Christchurch City Council’s Capital Endowment Fund – $95,000

Thanks to this incredible community effort, the newly resurfaced track is now ready for athletes to enjoy once again.
