Shadow Tech Day with ECan (Environment Canterbury)

Jordyn, Norah, Aimee, Mica, and Alize —

Five students recently had the opportunity to shadow female IT Workers at Ecan.

When we arrived at the business we were put into groups and given an introduction and an overview of what the day would look like. The GIS (Geographic Information System) was most enjoyable as we found it more relatable in that when using the map of Papanui area where we found our school and were able to draw down statistical information about Papanui High School.

Next we went to the Data Information Systems and did some interactive work with the data and learnt how information can displayed to analyse. Finally, we created a survey to help with analysing data from the general public input and we also did a tour of the company and the workplace environment and how they operate on a day to day basis.

We found this day to be insightful into the tech industry and how females have

opportunities within this industry to excel in areas not normally open to them. We

really enjoyed our day and learnt a lot.
