Culinary Champions

Food Tech —

Congratulations to Emma Beswick and Brodie Lidgett (Year 13) who are the regional winners (Canterbury, Nelson and Tasman) of the National Secondary Schools’ Culinary Challenge.

The National Secondary Schools’ Culinary Challenge is an annual event run by the Culinary Arts Development Trust.  The competition is designed to promote the next generation of culinary talent, provide career pathways for students, and to foster relationships between secondary schools and the hospitality sector.  Emma and Brodie will travel to Auckland to compete in the National Final on August 28th at the Manukau Institute of Technology.

They achieved 97/100 marks and a gold medal, as well as the 10 level 3 credits that are offered with National competitions.

The vegetable for 2024 was parsnips.  Emma and Brodie created a vegetarian version of a traditional Beef Wellington served with parsnip chips and a creamy parsnip puree.

This was the unit of work they worked on last term with staff members Judy Coleman and Tracey Atwool in the Year 13 Chef class.
