Tira Day 2025

On Friday 14th February Papanui High School ran its second annual Tira day. The purpose of the day was to build Whakawhanaungatanga, relationships, in a fun and engaging way.

Tira day is the first event of the Tira calendar and contributes points towards the termly Tira shield. Students came dressed in colours to represent their Tira and the outfits were again impressive this year.

Students met in their Tira in the mornings and completed 5 rotations of activities on the school field. These activities included; running races, sack races, jump jam, tug of war, and bench ball. At lunch Mr Whippy was on site and a free ice block shout was also available to students.

The afternoon consisted of a junior and senior tug of war teams competing inside a large circle of all students in the center of our field. Makomako showed strength winning both the junior and senior event. The finale was the spiral relay in which Tira gained points from participation numbers as well as overall placing. Some Tira were able to field 80 runners in their team and ultimately participation had a huge impact on final results. The whakatauki below highlights the importance of this to our Tira.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of an individual, but the work of many.

It came down to four Tira that could win the overall day depending on their placing in the relay. By a narrow margin Pīwakawaka won the relay and overall 1st place in Tira day for a consecutive year. The margin was small with 2 other Tira only 1% behind with the other events this term coming up soon.

Thanks to all the students and staff involved in making the day such a success.
