Sports News

Term 1 Sport is now fully underway. It is a jam packed term with not only weekly sport, but many other sporting opportunities and tournaments for our students.

We have 13 teams competing in the Term 1 Weekly Sport Competition, plus a large number of students participating in the Social In-House activities on offer this term.  We  have also had teams representing Papanui High School at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Senior Tennis Championships, and the Gillette Cup Cricket Preliminary Tournament.

You can find the link to the Weekly Sports Draw on School Bridge in Student Information under the Sport Tab.  The draw  will also be posted on the Sport’s Coordinators Office window (F6) by Interval on Monday mornings.

Gillette Cup Cricket Preliminary Tournament

With the absence of cricket last year, it was great to get a team together to play in the Gillette Cup Qualifying tournament this February.

The first game of the tournament was against Cashmere High School, and it is best to consider it a ‘warm-up’ game. Batting first, the team struggled to get going and ended up all out for just over 60 runs. The Cashmere openers made short work of this total and we all got to enjoy an extended lunch break as a result. The second game of the day against Riccarton High School was much more positive. Batting first again, we were able to put up a much better total, with Liam Kerr’s 89 leading the way. The bowling effort was also improved on as we tore through Riccarton’s batting line-up thanks to Jordy Moore’s 4 wickets and a very impressive fielding effort from the team.

Just like day one, the second day had its ups and downs. First up was a challenging game against Burnside, our long-time rivals. Bowling first this time, we managed to restrict them to around 150 runs. This was a good effort considering the firepower in their batting line-up. Unfortunately for us, the batting once again struggled to get going and we fell 50 runs short. Our second game went much better as we faced Hillmorton. Despite the fatigue from the previous three games being evident, we were able to stay strong as a fielding unit and bowl them out for 80. This total was quickly chased down by our top order, with some important runs from our openers Liam and Akila.

Finally, day three consisted of just one game against one of the strongest teams in the competition, Shirley Boys. Batting first, the sprinklers turning on mid-game could only delay the inevitable struggle against a good bowling side, and we were only able to reach a score of 90. A good bowling effort from our own bowlers gave us hope but unfortunately the Shirley batters just managed to surpass our total.

Overall, we finished 4th out of the 6 teams, just missing out on a spot into the next round. It was a great few days and everyone had a great time. A big thanks to Mr Hooper, Mr Stoddart, and Mr Powell who helped out at the games and Ms Lamb for organising the team.
