Heart Kids at PPS

Jo Morris —

Last week we had representatives from Embracing Hearts Charitable Trust, Heart Kids NZ and St John come out to take a photo with our special PPS Heart Kids to present the AED they (along with Buddle Findlay) have all helped to donate to the school.

Nearly 2000 New Zealanders suffer from a cardiac arrest (heart stoppage) outside of hospital each year and most of these happen in their home. This is four times the national road toll and yet it remains a silent disease in terms of public awareness. Performing CPR and using an AED is easy. By performing CPR and using an AED, you can help save a life.

Three Steps for Life

With St John, we are running a 3 Steps for Life awareness session for both staff and interested parents and whānau on Wednesday October 19th at 3pm.  It is for members of the community to introduce them to life saving skills for people in cardiac arrest. The awareness session will cover basic CPR and AED skills, and runs for approximately 45 minutes. To register for this free session please email jo.morris@pps.school.nz by Friday 14th October

The mission of Ngā Tohu Whakaora e 3 (3 Steps for Life), is to empower members of the community to step forward when help is needed and increase out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates in your local community.

Delivered by Volunteer Community Educators, this programme is a free one hour session and consists of public awareness sessions around basic CPR and AED training. It gives participants the skills and confidence to take action in responding to someone in cardiac arrest by 1) Calling 111, 2) Starting CPR, and 3) Using an AED.

Participants do not gain certification after sessions but are encouraged to become a GoodSAM (Good Smartphone Activated Medic) responder through the GoodSAM app. Find out more here: www.stjohn.org.nz/goodsam
