Principal's message

Paul Kingston —

This is the last newsletter for the year - it's a bit longer than usual so make yourself comfortable.

The last two years have been a real challenge for everyone.

Unfortunately Lockdowns and Levels have reduced the amount of time that parents have spent in school and in classrooms so the relationship building between teachers and parents has not been as we would like it. This means that contact is often over email or Seesaw and and not 'kanohi ki te kanohi' - face to face.

We haven't been able to host parents and families to our events or celebrate children's learning so I am in no doubt this has had a negative impact for everyone - children, parents, whānau and teachers.

This is borne out for teachers in the ERO survey showing declining wellbeing for teachers and principals - Stuff article or if you're up for a bigger read ERO Report.

Looking to 2022, the Ministry of Education has been doing a lot of planning in the event that Covid spreads south.  They have new advice and support prepared for schools.  We'll keep you updated if there are consequences or requirements for the school. It is vital that you keep your contact details up to date.

THANK YOU

The governance and oversight of the Board of Trustees ensures the school prioritises its spending and stays focused on children. It has been a privilege to work alongside the parent reps Carolyn, Alana, Joss, Mark, Mike and staff rep Lisa T - ably supported by secretary Lynne.

Thank you to Anita, Sharon, Mel, Natalie and the rest of the Friends of the School (PTA) team for their ongoing support of the school. Their fundraising contributes greatly to the resources and opportunities that our children enjoy.

There are a number of families who will be ending their association with the school as their children move on to the next level of schooling or are just moving on. A huge thanks to those families, and a special thank you to Kim and Stuart Langsford, Tracey and Darren Grant, Wendy and Brendon Somerville, and Tracey McClure - we extend our best wishes for 2022 and beyond.

STAFFING

We have acknowledged Glen Thompson who is moving on but we are also farewelling two teacher aides - Phoenix and Karen.  They both have made a valuable contribution supporting our children with their learning and behaviour.  Thank you so much and best wishes for the future.

Marian Rait rejoins us in 2022 after a year teaching in a bi-lingual unit.

Anna Lindsay is teaching in Pūkeko with Sharon.  Anna is an experienced teacher and has experience in ECE.

Well done! You've made it to the end of the newsletter.

On behalf of the school I’d like to wish you and your families a very happy holiday and a safe New Year. I hope you all get to enjoy lots of sun, smiles and laughter with friends and family.

Kia kaha te menemene - keep smiling

Paul
