Video 2 - Advanced Phonemic Awareness with Liz Kane

Jo Harris —

This is another video to support learning at home. Advanced phonemic awareness is where we ask children to change a sound by either adding a sound, delete a sound or substitute a sound in a word. It adds another layer to the blending and segmenting from video 1.

If you don't have letter cards at home you can use milk bottle tops with the letters on them or make some out of paper or card. You would use a word chain where each time you are changing one sound like from sam to pam to pat.  Then as you move up in complexity you might change top to stop to slop. You can watch the video here.  Some of the key steps in the process are:

  • build the word 'sam'
  • if need be touch and say each sound 's - a - m'
  • change to pam - take out the sound 's' and put in the sound 'p'
  • change to pat - take out the sound 'm' and put in the sound 't'
  • sometimes you may need to hover over the sound with your finger that the child needs to add, delete or change to support them to make the right choice

If you have any questions after watching the video please just speak to your child's teacher.
